You want the room to feel warm the second you step out of the shower, but you don’t want a light show that hurts your eyes. When we build these things, we have a tricky balance to strike: give you rapid heat, but keep the light under control. This is especially important for babies, whose eyes are way more sensitive than ours. Dealing with the glare Most standard IR lamps throw off a harsh, bright white light. It’s stressful on the eyes. To fix this, we use special coatings or doped quartz glass. Think of it like a pair of sunglasses for the heater. It blocks out that blinding visible light but lets the actual heat—the infrared radiation—slide right through. You end up with a soft, gentle glow instead of a spotlight. You still get that deep, cozy warmth that dries out a damp room fast, but you can actually look up without squinting. The nitty-gritty on the hardware Now, regarding the setup: most of these run on your normal home voltage, but the wattage depends on how high your ceilings are. Here’s the thing: more wattage means more heat. To stop the fixture from warping or melting over time, we use high-temp ceramics for the supports. They can take the heat. One quick tip if you’re installing these: don’t cram them into a tight ceiling space. Give the ballast some room to breathe so it doesn’t overheat. The trade-off I’ll be honest with you—there is a small catch. By filtering out the light to keep your eyes safe, we lose a tiny bit of the total energy. It’s a slight dip in efficiency, but it’s a trade we’re happy to make. Safety beats a few extra percentages of energy every time.
