Most of the time, they’re just fighting a losing battle against the humidity until they eventually pop a circuit and leave you shivering in a towel. That’s why we’re seeing everyone switch to high-IP infrared (IR) heaters. They actually handle the moisture without throwing a tantrum. The difference in how you feel the heat Here is the thing about standard heaters: they try to warm up the air. But hot air rises. In a bathroom, that heat just floats up to the ceiling and disappears through the vent, leaving your toes freezing on the tile. IR systems work differently. They send out short-wave radiation that travels in a straight line. It hits you—or your mirror—directly. You feel the warmth the second you flip the switch. You aren’t waiting for the room to “warm up”; you’re just warm. Built for the steam We all know water and electricity are a bad mix. Most cheap lamps fail because steam sneaks into the socket or the seal gives way. To fix this, these new units use high “IP ratings.” In plain English? They’re sealed tight. We use quartz glass and special gaskets so the steam can’t reach the electrodes. When water gets into a standard R7s socket, it arcs and burns out. A sealed IR unit just keeps on humming. A quick heads-up on installation Now, there is a catch. These things pack a punch. Because they put out so much more heat, you can’t just swap them into an old fixture and call it a day. You need to make sure your breakers can handle the extra wattage. High-output IR lamps draw more current than those old, dim bulbs. Plus, do yourself a favor and use moisture-resistant cabling. Don’t just piggyback off your existing light circuit. Since these get seriously hot, use heat-resistant mounting brackets too. You don’t want your ceiling trim warping because the fixture is roasting it from the inside.
