
Stop the Cracks: A Better Way to Preheat Glass
Here is the problem with glass: it hates surprises. If you take a cold piece of glass and slam it with intense heat, it’s going to crack. Every single time. It’s just physics. To get through the tempering process without a pile of wasted shards, you have to be smart about how you warm things up. That’s where shortwave infrared (IR) lamps come in.
Why “Instant” Matters
You can’t just flip a switch on a standard heater and expect it to work for this. You need something that reacts the second you change the voltage. Shortwave IR lamps are incredible because they hit their operating temperature in milliseconds. When you pair them with SCR power controllers, you can basically “dial in” the heat. Instead of a sudden shock, you give the glass a gentle ramp-up. It expands evenly, stays happy, and slides into the main furnace without any drama.
Packing a Punch (and the Catch)
We design these lamps to pack a lot of wattage into a small space. We use high-density quartz elements that beam energy straight into the glass. It doesn’t waste time heating up the air around the machine; it just goes right into the material. It’s fast. Really fast. But, there is a trade-off. Pushing that much power means you can’t cut corners with your electrical setup. You’ll need heavy-gauge wiring and a rock-solid power phase. If your voltage starts bouncing around, you’re asking for trouble—either you’ll burn out your filaments or end up with cold spots in your glass.
Getting Them Installed
We kept the hardware simple. We use standard connectors (like R7s or Sk15 bases) so these can be drop-in replacements. They fit tight, which is key because the last thing you want is a lamp vibrating loose while the line is running. One last thing—and this is the part people usually forget:keep the lamps clean. Dust and oil on the quartz aren’t just messy; they create hot spots. Those hot spots kill the tubes way faster than they should. Set up a strict cleaning schedule. It’s a small bit of effort that keeps your heat consistent and your equipment running longer.
