
Getting the Wattage Right for Your Infrared Towel Rails
Here is the thing about infrared heaters: you can’t just pick a random number and hope for the best. If you overdo it, you’re basically throwing money out the window and stressing your electrical circuits for no reason. The beauty of IR is that it’s targeted. It hits the towel (or you) directly. It doesn’t waste time trying to heat up every single molecule of air in the room.
Matching the Power to Your Space
One size definitely doesn’t fit all here. If you’ve got a tiny powder room—something under 4m²—a small lamp (around 200W to 400W) does the trick. It keeps the towels dry and cozy. If you slap a 1000W unit in a space that small, you’ll end up with a “heat soak” effect. It just feels oppressive and wastes power. But if you’re dealing with a larger bathroom (6m² to 12m²), you’ll want something punchier, maybe between 600W and 1200W. You want the rail to stay consistently warm without the lamp having to run at full blast 24/7. Plus, in those big rooms with cold tiled walls, a weak heater just isn’t enough. The heat disappears into the walls before your towel even feels a thing.
The Trade-offs
More wattage means more heat, but it comes with a catch. A 1200W lamp is fast. Really fast. But it puts a lot more pressure on the wiring and the housing. We have to be careful that the internal wires are thick enough to handle that current, otherwise, the whole chassis starts to overheat. We use shortwave IR because it’s instant. No waiting around for a “warm-up” period. You turn it on, and it’s hot. Just be mindful—high-wattage lamps can create “hot spots” if the towel isn’t draped just right.
A Quick Tip for the Install
Before you wire anything in, take a look at the room. Does it have a big, drafty window? Are the walls thin? Start with 600W as your baseline for a normal home. Only go higher if the room is huge or if you’re fighting a constant chill. Keep it simple. Match the power to how fast you actually need those towels to dry, and you’re golden.
