
Getting Low-E Glass Heating Right (When You’re Dealing With Huge Sheets)
If you’ve ever worked with Low-E glass, you know the anxiety of the stress cutting process. One wrong move with the thermal gradient and—crack—there goes your sheet. When you’re dealing with glass wider than 3 meters, you can’t just buy a few lamps off a shelf and hope for the best. That’s a recipe for disaster. We build custom, ultra-long infrared heating units because those wide gaps are where things usually go wrong.
The problem with “The Gap”
Here’s the thing: once you go past 3 meters, physics starts working against you. You get voltage drops and uneven heat. Most people try to patch together a bunch of small lamps, but that leaves “cold spots.” You end up with a striping effect across the glass, which is exactly what leads to shattering. We do it differently. We use continuous quartz tubes. No patches, no gaps. Just a smooth, flat heat profile across the whole surface.
The nitty-gritty on the build
We use high-purity quartz to house the tungsten filaments. Depending on your specific coating, we’ll help you pick between shortwave and medium-wave heat. And we don’t let the energy just float away into the ceiling. We add specialized reflectors to bounce that heat right back down onto the glass. It’s more efficient and keeps the oven from becoming a giant radiator for the rest of the factory. We also don’t mess around with the wiring. Long units expand and contract as they heat up. If the connectors aren’t reinforced, the lamps will just burn out at the terminals. We build them to take the heat.
The stuff people forget
A 3-meter heating array is a beast. It pulls a massive amount of power. You can’t just plug this into a standard circuit and call it a day. You’ll need to look at your transformers and contactors to make sure they can handle that initial surge of current when the system kicks in. Plus, there’s the airflow. The more heat we pack into those tubes, the harder your cooling fans have to work. If your ventilation is weak, the housing will warp and your lamps will die way sooner than they should. Keep them cool, and they’ll last.
